The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is important for everyone, but it’s especially important for children. Did you know that dental decay is the most common childhood disease in the United States? It’s true! That’s because their teeth are still developing, and they’re more susceptible to cavity formation. For this reason, it is so important to make sure your child is brushing and flossing properly between dental visits.

To brush and floss properly, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing twice daily for two minutes and flossing once each day. Depending on the child’s age, they may need help from a parent or guardian to ensure they’re brushing and flossing correctly. To determine the best toothpaste for your child based on their age, please contact our office.

The Importance of a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet helps to keep teeth and gums healthy, and it can also prevent many dental problems. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help to reduce the risk of dental decay.

  • Anything that’s crunchy and full of fiber is great for scrubbing away plaque and bacteria, so think apples, celery, and carrots.
  • Drinking plenty of water is also important, as it helps to keep the mouth hydrated and washes away food and bacteria.

The Importance of Regular Dental Check-ups

In addition to practicing good oral hygiene at home, it’s also important to visit the dentist regularly. At our office, we recommend that children have a cleaning and exam every six months. These appointments give us a chance to remove any plaque or tartar that has built up on the teeth and to check for any signs of tooth decay or other dental problems. We can also answer any questions you may have about your child’s oral health or home care routine. Regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining good oral health.

What Happens During A Checkup?

  • During a typical checkup, the child will be seated in a dental chair, and we may begin by asking if there are any concerns or questions. From there, our dental hygienist will proceed to clean their teeth using a small, electric toothbrush and flavored toothpaste. We will also floss their teeth and may apply fluoride to help protect them from cavities.
  • After the cleaning, the dentist will come in and check their teeth and gums for any signs of decay or other problems. We may also take x-rays to check for any problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye.
  • Once the exam is complete, we will discuss any findings and answer any questions you may have. We may also make recommendations for at-home care or future treatment.
