pediatric
dental cleanings & exams

As a parent, you want what’s best for your child. When it comes to their teeth, that means making sure they have regular dental cleanings and exams. At our office, we recommend that children have their first dental cleaning and exam around their first birthday. After that, they should have a cleaning and exam every six months. But why are pediatric dental checkups so important?

Take a look below to discover the importance of smile maintenance and what you can do to keep their smiles in shape between visits! Contact our Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY office today to schedule your child’s appointment.

The Importance of Good Dental Cleanings and Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene starts at home, but professional cleanings fill in the gaps that brushing and flossing can’t reach. During a cleaning, we remove plaque and tartar buildup, especially in those hard-to-reach spots along the gumline and between teeth. This not only keeps your child’s smile looking great but also helps prevent gum irritation and early signs of decay before they become bigger problems. Think of it as a reset button for their oral health every six months

What Happens During A Checkup?

  • During a typical checkup, the child will be seated in a dental chair, and we may begin by asking if there are any concerns or questions. From there, our dental hygienist will proceed to clean their teeth using a small, electric toothbrush and flavored toothpaste. We will also floss their teeth and may apply fluoride to help protect them from cavities.
  • After the cleaning, the dentist will come in and check their teeth and gums for any signs of decay or other problems. We may also take x-rays to check for any problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye.
  • Once the exam is complete, we will discuss any findings and answer any questions you may have. We may also make recommendations for at-home care or future treatment.
